Glaucoma

Understanding Glaucoma at Vision City of Lake Worth

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that target the optic nerve. It occurs when there is a build-up of pressure inside the eye. The disease can occur at any age but is more common in old age. Without quality eye care services, glaucoma can cause irreversible blindness.

At the Vision City of Lake Worth, TX, we are committed to making your eye health a priority. We perform comprehensive eye exams for the entire family. Our optometry expert, Dr. Trina Lieske, reviews your medical history before embarking on evaluating vision clarity. We also test for conditions such as glaucoma that can become irreversible if not spotted early on.

Glaucoma

Types of Glaucoma

There are many different forms of glaucoma. However, the most come ones we see include:

  • Open-angle glaucoma: eye partial blockage preventing the free flow of fluid out of the eye, leading to pressure build-up within the eye.
  • Developmental glaucoma: happens mainly in infants and children and often without visible symptoms.
  • Angle-closure glaucoma: bulging of the iris leading to blockage of the drainage system, causing an increase in intraocular pressure.
  • Normal-tension glaucoma: a damaged optic nerve due to a lack of blood flow to the optic nerve.
  • Pigmentary glaucoma: the eye develops pigment granules that may lead to blockage of drainage channels.

Warning Signs of Glaucoma

Unfortunately, glaucoma has no specific warning signs. It can happen so drastically that you may not notice until the condition is at an advanced stage. However, you should seek immediate eye care if you detect any of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of peripheral vision: tendency to lose sight on the sides of the eyes is often the first sign of glaucoma.
  • Tunnel vision: a situation where you lose vision around the edges of your visual field
  • Sensitivity to lights: seeing rainbow-colored circles around a light could be an early symptom of glaucoma.
  • Redness in the eye: Sometimes accompanied by pain, which may signify injury, infection, or acute glaucoma.
  • Signs of hazy eyes: A cloudy cornea often signifies the early development of glaucoma.

How to Prevent Glaucoma

The following self-care can assist you in preventing glaucoma from occurring.

  • Get a regular eye exam. Regular eye exams by our qualified and experienced optometrist can help identify glaucoma in its early stages. This can prevent further damage from occurs.
  • Wear eye protection gears. A severe form of eye injury can cause glaucoma. Have your eye protection on when using power tools or working outdoors.

  • Take your eye drops regularly. If adequately used as prescribed, glaucoma eye drops can reduce eye pressure.
