Flashes

When you have eye flashes happening, it can be worrying. However, they tend to be much like eye floaters and are usually not a problem for most patients. They can be startling, however. If they happen often, you might want to talk to our optometrist about them. If you need an annual vision exam, call our optometry center, Vision City of Lake Work, in Lake Worth, TX, to schedule your vision exams or your eye exams. It may be vital for the health of your eyes to receive preventative care and to be screened for common eye conditions and diseases.

floaters and flashes

What Are Eye Flashes?

They are like floaters. Many people are used to seeing the occasional floater but seeing occasional flashes can be frightening. Flashes and floaters are similar in what causes them. They are often the result of the vitreous gel, the gel inside the eyes, going through changes. This can happen simply because you are getting older, or it may happen because of an eye surgery that you've had or by having a strong case of nearsightedness. It is more likely to have flashes at the edges of the vision. This happens because as the gel-like fluid changes its consistency, it can become separated from the retina in the back of the eye. This is called posterior vitreous detachment. While it separates, the gel can continue to stick to the retina, and this is what can cause problems. It is more likely to happen at the sides of the retina, and therefore the flashes are often in the side vision.

Serious Vision Problems

Occasional flashes can be caused by this, but if the situation is worse, it can cause the retina to be torn. When the internal gel is strongly stuck to the retina, this can cause a tear as it tugs on the retina. The friction of the tugging can be serious, and a torn retina needs medical attention. If you have a lot of flashes that are repeated, this can mean that you have a serious medical condition. If this is happening, call an emergency optometrist or ophthalmologist to schedule an appointment to get a vision exam. If you do have a serious situation with your eyes but is not an emergency, seeing our optometrist on our optometry team can help you to avoid permanent loss of vision.
